Ripstop nylon is the lower-risk shell for travel organizers because its grid weave stops a tear from running, which is the failure mode that matters when a piece is over-packed and pulled at the seams. RPET is viable and supports a recycled-content position, but at equivalent strength it is usually the heavier of the two and does not arrest tears the same way.

For travel organizers the shell has to survive being over-packed, compressed, dragged across an airport floor and unpacked again — repeatedly. That changes the material comparison from the one you would run for a retail pouch.

Ripstop nylon and RPET are both viable. They fail in different ways, which is the useful thing to know before choosing.

Ripstop's grid construction is doing exactly what the name says: a tear that starts stays local instead of running. For a piece that will be packed tight and pulled at the seams, that is the single most relevant property, and it is why ripstop dominates the category.

RPET in a comparable weight abrades acceptably but does not have the same tear-arresting behaviour. For a product that is used lightly this rarely surfaces; for a packing cube that gets stuffed past its intended volume, it does.

Ripstop is available in low weights that stay strong, which matters when a set of organizers is being sold on how little it adds to the bag. RPET at an equivalent strength is usually the heavier of the two.

Both fold flat. Ripstop tends to recover its shape faster after compression, which affects how the product looks when the customer first unpacks it — a small thing that carries a lot of the perceived quality.

Whichever shell is chosen, travel pieces deserve one extra check the schedule should allow for: loading the sample with the contents it is actually designed for. A cube that measures correctly can still fail once packed, and that is far cheaper to discover at sample stage.

If the program carries a sustainability message, RPET is the route that supports it — with the same caveat as elsewhere: confirm what can be documented for the specific material before the claim reaches copy.

Because the failure mode that matters is a tear starting at a seam under compression. The ripstop grid keeps that tear local instead of letting it run.

For normal use, yes. The difference shows on pieces that get over-packed regularly, where tear propagation rather than abrasion is what ends the product's life.

Yes. A cube that measures correctly can still fail once packed with the contents it is designed for. That check is far cheaper at sample stage.

It can, and sometimes should — a mesh face for visibility with a ripstop body is common. Each panel material is specified separately in the build.
