Screen print flat, solid marks at volume; print digitally when the artwork has gradients or fine detail; use heat transfer on coated or textured shells that resist direct printing. Screen setup is charged per colour, so a two-colour mark is cheap and a six-colour mark is not — the crossover with digital depends on colour count and quantity together.

For gift-with-purchase, the branding method is a cost and schedule decision as much as a visual one. At the quantities these programs run, a method that adds a small per-unit cost adds a large total.

As with embroidery and debossing, the artwork usually decides. Send the file with the brief and most of the discussion resolves itself.

Screen printing is the default for flat, solid marks at volume. Setup is per colour, so a one- or two-colour mark is cheap to run and a six-colour mark is not. Once set up, the per-unit cost is low and colour consistency across the run is excellent.

It does not handle gradients or photographic detail. A mark that depends on a subtle blend either needs simplifying for this method or needs a different method.

Digital printing carries no per-colour setup, so it suits detailed artwork, gradients and full-colour imagery. That makes it the right route for marks that would be expensive or impossible to screen print.

The per-unit cost stays flatter as quantity rises, which means it can lose to screen printing at high volumes on a simple mark and win comfortably at any volume on a complex one. The crossover depends on colour count and quantity together.

Heat transfer sits between the two: good detail, moderate setup, and it applies cleanly to shells that are awkward to print directly. It is often the practical answer for coated or textured materials.

The trade-off is hand-feel — the mark sits on the surface rather than in it. On a piece where the branded area is touched frequently, that is worth checking on a sample before committing.

GWP schedules are usually fixed to a launch or event date. Send that date with the brief: it determines how much revision room actually exists, and the branding method affects the schedule as much as the construction does.

Where the mark needs to read as premium rather than printed, it is worth pricing a debossed or woven-label option alongside — sometimes the quieter route costs less than the elaborate print it replaces.

When the artwork has gradients, photographic content or many colours. Screen is charged per colour at setup, so a complex mark loses its cost advantage quickly.

Direct printing on pile and coated surfaces is unreliable. Heat transfer or a woven label is the usual route, and the choice is confirmed on a sample of the actual shell.

Technically several, but each colour is a separate setup and a separate registration risk. Beyond about three colours, digital is usually the better answer.

Before the branding method is set up. After that, a change is a new setup rather than an adjustment — which is why we ask for the launch date with the brief.
